For a woman to be artificially inseminated, the first step to follow is undergoing mild ovarian stimulation in order to monitor egg maturation and ovulation. In case the husband's sperm is used, he must provide the sample to the fertility clinic so that they can process it in the lab. In case donor sperm is used, then the origin of the sample will be a sperm bank, in which case it has to be prepared for being used in an insemination procedure. Finally, the sample, after being prepared, is inserted in the woman's womb aided by a cannula (catheter).
Sperm have to travel through the female reproductive system toward the Fallopian tubes, where they will find an egg, so that natural fertilization occurs.
